Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA in short) is a protein-containing substance that performs important functions in the central nervous system (CNS). It is a “messenger substance” (neurotransmitter), which forwards information (stimuli) in the brain and spinal cord. The German professor Dr. Hanns Möhler recognised its special significance for the CNS as a neurotransmitter in the 1980s.

GABA belongs to the group of inhibitory messengers of the central nervous system. A nerve transmission takes place through the attachment of the messenger substances to the so-called receptors (docking sites). Almost all nerve cells in the brain have docking sites for the neurotransmitter, and in as much as 40% of all neurons, GABA plays a role in the delivery of information. As a result, it takes over a number of important functions in the nervous system and is furthermore responsible for the correct transfer of information.
