L-carnosine is a dipeptide, which is composed of the two amino acids histidine and beta-alanine. The valuable and extremely important substance is an integral part of our body and is found especially in the nerve cells, in the muscle tissue, in the heart and in the skin. The content of L-carnosine in the body is significantly higher in childhood than in old age. It is notable that the decrease in carnosine content in old age also corresponds to the reduction of muscle mass – about 60 % from the tenth to the seventieth year of life.
As a natural substance, L-carnosine is also part of many foods. Here belongs above all meat, as it prevents rancidity due to the antioxidant effect. Therefore, the more carnosine it is contained in a piece of meat, the longer is its shelf life.
Since meat is one of the main food sources for humans, supplementation is recommended, especially for vegetarians. And especially with increasind age it can also be meaningful.
