Description

Description

N-acetyl L cysteine (NAC) is known as a mucolytic agent composed of thiol and a precursor of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that remains at high levels when NAC is consumed.

Antoxidants act by combating free radicals that are constantly formed in the body by various factors such as environmental factors and diet.

Acetylcysteine, also known as N-acetylcysteine (abbreviation NAC), is a pharmacological agent used primarily as a mucolytic agent (to reduce the viscosity of mucus secretions), functions as a mucolytic, thinning secretions and, through its antioxidant power, helps in recovery of Organs respiratory organs namely helps to improve the functioning of the lungs.

It is also one of the most important and powerful natural detoxifiers in our body and especially in the liver.

Composed of three amino acids (Glycine, Cysteine and Glutamine) it is described as being a fundamental compound in the detoxification of the liver against toxins, through its ability to react with organic peroxides and promote their reduction and elimination.

The action of NAC is increasingly being studied in order to elucidate its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Studies show that NAC can act by decreasing the inflammatory state.

In some studies(1*)(2*), the use of NAC to reduce COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) was investigated in more detail and some of the symptoms were reduced. In another study, it was shown that the intake of NAC can directly increase the levels of glutathione in the blood (3*).

Suitable for vegans.

Benefits of N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC)

N-acetyl L cysteine (NAC) is known as a mucolytic agent composed of thiol and a precursor of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that remains at high levels when NAC is consumed. Antioxidants act by fighting free radicals that are constantly formed in the body by various factors such as environmental factors and food. When these free radicals are not neutralized and eliminated from the body, they can contribute to the emergence of some diseases and also to the imbalance in maintaining health.

The action of NAC is increasingly being studied in order to elucidate its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Studies show that NAC can act by decreasing the inflammatory state. Excess body adiposity, for example, is known for the appearance of metabolic changes mainly because it induces activation of oxidative stress and prolonged inflammation, leading to the development of comorbidities and metabolic syndrome.

NAC has prophylactic effects on metabolic complications associated with obesity. Its action is related to reducing the accumulation of cellular lipids and increasing the levels of intracellular antioxidants in adipocytes, contributing to the reduction of inflammation and also the damage caused by oxidative stress. Its ability to increase endogenous glutathione levels makes NAC one of the most important antioxidants in protecting against oxidative stress and increases its therapeutic potential as it prevents many diseases induced by oxidative stress.

It was observed that adipocytes treated with NAC as in insulin resistance showed improvement in glucose uptake through modulation of proteins involved in insulin signaling pathways. In addition to the observed benefits, NAC can also act significantly in inflammation by reducing the levels of activators of the inflammation cascade such as tumor necrosis factor (TNFα) and interleukin.

The use of NAC has also been observed in schizophrenia, which is considered a disabling psychiatric syndrome and its etiology remains unknown. One of the mechanisms of schizophrenia is the defect in the antioxidant system that causes an increase in the level of lipid peroxide. Oxidative stress promotes membrane defects, immune system dysfunction and pathologies of different neurotransmitter systems. In these patients a decrease in blood, cerebrospinal fluid and prefrontal cortex of glutathione is observed. N-acetyl L-cysteine has been suggested as an adjuvant therapy and has shown efficacy in these patients.

A study of 140 patients with chronic schizophrenia and 69 treated with 2000 mg daily of NAC for 6 months showed significant improvement in schizophrenia symptoms. Other studies could also elucidate the improvements with the use of NAC in social interactions, motivations, behavior stability and psychomotor stability.

The use of NAC has been considered important for maintaining adequate levels of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that has the ability to reduce inflammation levels and prevent diseases caused by oxidative stress when not controlled.
